Union Station Centennial Celebration

Union Station is Hannah's favorite place in KC.  I'm not a big fan of trains, but I do love beautiful architecture and interesting history. :)  And I was very excited to try out the new app.  You find circle markers on the floor, point your phone in the direction of the arrow, and then you can see a camera view of the actual Union Station (and anyone standing there) along with images of an historical event that happened in that place.  Make sense?  They also opened a new history exhibit on the 2nd floor.

For all the times we've been to Union Station, it was the first time we saw the Amtrak unloading.

 We also toured an Amtrak exhibit train which included an computer-simulated train engineer experience for kids.

 

Of course I read the special centennial magazine from cover to cover.  The building has an interesting history.  I had no idea that in the 1980's Amtrak set up a large plastic bubble inside the station so they wouldn't have to pay to heat/cool/repair the building.  Then when they moved out, Union Station was in ruins with most of the plaster ceiling missing and standing water on the floor.  It is amazing that this city was able to restore it and make it a tourist destination.  Please visit Union Station if you are in KC!
