Back to the Future

A lot of people have a big party when they turn 30.  When I turned 30 I was pregnant with Olive and not really up to much of a celebration.  Then we figured out a few years ago that "the future" in the movie Back to the Future was October 21, 2015.  And my 35th birthday was October 18, 2015.  A birthday party theme was born!  If you haven't seen the Back to the Future trilogy, Marty McFly time travels (in a Delorean) to the years 1955, 2015, 1885, and the movie is set in the year 1985.  We told our guests to dress up in any of these time periods.  We chose 1985.  The girls wore my real clothes from the 80s and allowed me to crimp their hair!  That is a birthday present in itself.  I dressed up as Jennifer (Marty's girlfriend) and Steve was Doc.  Not Marty.  Doc.  Why?  He said he was too tall for Marty and he was more of a Doc.

Oh yeah, and we made the Delorean time machine out of cardboard.  And a bunch of other stuff.  Decorating was almost as fun as the party itself.  The girls LOVE decorating for parties.

Each room was a decorated for a different time period.  This was the Enchantment Under the Sea dance from 1955.  We set up a stage area with all our musical instruments for the kids.

The kitchen was 2015.  We had flying (toy) cars and future toys for the kids.  The appliances were labeled with things like "food hydrator" and "robotic trash can."  The calendar had important reminders like my appointment at the rejuvenation clinic.

The family room was 1985.  Our fireplace turned into the courthouse.  And there were flame tracks on the floor.

 Finally downstairs we had 1885.  Back to the Future III was set in the wild west and luckily we have lots of toy horses and trains.  Hannah also hung up western decorations on the walls and I found an outhouse door covering for the bathroom. :)

Oh yeah, we had a coloring station in the living room so "kids" could decorate their own Delorean.

And we had this exact replica of the cake from the first movie!  We also served Pizza Hut pizza (featured in the second movie) and Pepsi (product placement in all the movies).

Our friends brought their A game and the costumes were AWESOME.  Casey and Marissa embraced the 80's as Magnum PI and a businesswoman.

 The Redburns were also 80's with Gideon as Marty McFly.  Finally someone of the appropriate size!

It was an awesome night!  The kids loved performing at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance.

And playing in the car.

But they had the best time in the leaves in the backyard.

We had the movies playing during the party.  My character is on the screen...although you can't see it.

And the night ended (as every fall party should) with a fire.

Best birthday ever.  I had a great day on my actual birthday, then this party was even more fun.  The next day Hannah was asking when we could have another Back to the Future party.  I told her she'd have to wait another 30 years.
